「暁月夜」 grey suns《黎明》. 2025. Black and light grey risograph ink on washi. 15 x 10 cm. (5.91 x 3.94 in).
My practice involves developing long-term image series that evolve into various versions of books and installations. This accordion-bound photo book extends one such series, first introduced in the smallest registers of motion《微尘似梦》「上り月や 手に震える」.
I printed this book in black and light grey risograph ink to evoke the softness of pencil drawings and give more depth and body to the midtones of the images. Through syncopations in light and shadow, fullness and emptiness, the work traces a slow, gentle walk amidst the soft shroud of a grey sun.
暁月夜 (read as 'akatokizukuyo') refers to the moon that remains visible in the sky as dawn breaks, and I often incorporate words like this to heighten audiences’ attention to these subtle natural phenomena, a close looking and gaze that I take to my practice while I am out on my long, slow walks capturing the photographs that I use in my artist books.
