「俳句の箱庭」(Garden of Haikus) conveys the experience and sensation of reading a Japanese haiku—its nuances, atmospheric quality, and revelatory potential. The box component features fully functioning shōji doors. Each of these sliding doors opens up to one book.
The seasons play an integral role in Japanese haiku tradition, with specific kigo (季語, literally translating to 'season word') corresponding to particular seasons. When one identifies a kigo in a haiku, one will know which season the haiku is speaking to. To emphasise this crucial feature, I crafted one compartment for each season. Each compartment houses one book and each book portrays one haiku.
The haikus featured in this book are as follows:
Spring haiku: 雪解や竹はね返る日の表 ー正岡子規
Summer haiku: 蝉の空松籟塵を漲らし ー川端茅舎
Autumn haiku: 露の世は露の世ながらさりながら ー小林一茶
Winter haiku: 凩や鐘引きすてて道の端 ー正岡子規
